What Are Emergency Medical Services?

In life-and-death situations, emergency medical services (EMS) deliver acute, urgent, pre-hospital care for patients, and it ensures the immediate transportation of patients to healthcare facilities. EMS is a highly coordinated, strategic system that involves clinicians, medical specialists, organizations, people and volunteers.

Emergency Medical Services

4 Types of EMS Services

1. Private ambulance firms: Paid emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics tend to the patient’s critical health issues. Patients are quickly and urgently transported to the hospital by way of ambulance.

2. Intensive care unit (ICU): Following the patient’s arrival to the hospital, physicians and nurses tend to the individual’s critical illnesses or injuries. The ICU provides 24/7 clinical care for all patients.

3. Bystander assistance: People at the scene of an emergency event assist patients prior to the arrival of EMTs. Trained bystanders often perform CPR.

4. Volunteer agencies: Majority of staff are not compensated for their efforts. Volunteers respond to 911 emergencies and may provide transportation for patients.
